Hand-Selected Inventory

Few musicians have the patience to try out dozens upon dozens of instruments hoping to find the one or two that “speak” to them, and even fewer clarinetists have the resources for such an endeavor. James’ Clarinet Shop takes the initiative and seeks out the gems of the clarinet world. By travelling to Jacksonville Florida, Buffet USA’s headquarters and sole distribution center, I select the best-of-the-best before other dealers even have access to them!  Here are a few things I look for in each clarinet:

Sound Color and Focus:

Every instrument I carry varies in tonal color.  Some clarinets are brighter, others are richer. Some have a large palette of different colors, while others are more even and “creamy” throughout. These distinctions are difficult to explain, but very easy to hear!

Resistance:

Ideal resistance depends greatly on an individual’s mouthpiece setup, embouchure, and preferred play style. Since every customer’s needs are slightly different, I carry a full range of instruments ranging from open and free blowing to resistant. No matter what your setup is, I will provide you with an instrument that comfortably and efficiently uses your air.

Pitch and tuning:

Though no clarinet tunes perfectly, all the instruments I carry are checked note by note for evenness of pitch. Ensuring even 12ths is especially important. There is no substitute for superior tuning!

Mechanical Consistency

Since each and every professional Buffet Clarinet is fully hand-assembled, there are occasional mechanical differences between individual horns. To ensure that all the instruments I carry are perfectly fluid and responsive under your fingers, my entire inventory is set up by Rick Sayre in Lombard, IL. I will not send an instrument on trial until it seals and responds in a way that reaches my playing expectations.

Excellent Variety

Many retailers have an R13 or two lying around their shop, but what if the customer needs something else? When it came time for me to purchase my own first professional horn, I was unable to find a single Festival or Tosca clarinet anywhere in the state of Minnesota. That was the catalyst for starting my own business. James’ Clarinet Shop is proud to carry a full range of Buffet’s professional and harmony instruments. No matter what bore family, model, or features you want in a Buffet, I either already have it or can easily get it. Furthermore, I offer a selection of used clarinets that undergo the same intensive scrutiny as my new instruments. I hold all my products to the same impeccable standards.

One-On-One Expert Service

When you work with James’ Clarinet Shop, you work with James. There is no web of phone extensions or departments you need to wade through. Working with me is a one-on-one experience between two musicians. I work exclusively with clarinets and pride myself on staying up to date on the latest developments in the clarinet market. When you work with me, every interaction is tailored to your needs as a player. Unless I am out of town, I will always respond to your phone calls and emails within 24 hours.

WHY JAMES' CLARINET SHOP?

The world of music sales just isn’t what it used to be. In a world dominated my monolithic, electronic superstores, personalized service and expert knowledge have all but disappeared. As a very picky customer, I have encountered great frustration with this style of operation. Excellent musicians deserve excellent service!
